2 ABSTRACT Transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi occurs mainly when the feces of infected triatomines come into contact with the mucous membranes or skin of their hosts. These occur mainly when the insects feed on the blood of their hosts, including humans. Therefore, feeding and excretion behavior are related to the vectorial competence of triatomines. This work analyzed the effect of T. cruzi infection on the feeding and defecation patterns of Triatoma dimidiata (Hemiptera: Reduviidae). This study examined feeding and defecation behaviors and recorded these patterns during and after feeding in fifth-instar nymphs of T. dimidiata non-infected and infected with T. cruzi. The results revealed differences in the analyzed patterns between infected and uninfected insects. Infected nymphs presented the shortest defecation time compared to uninfected nymphs. These results demonstrate that T. cruzi can affect the feeding and defecation patterns of T. dimidiata, increasing the probability of infection to the host.es_MX
