The objective was to evaluate three lines of an ecotype of the Yaax’ ic criollo chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) under field conditions, in order to determine the best genetic material for production and conservation. The genetic material used originated from the municipality of Izamal, Yucatán, provided by the farmer Clotilde Cohuo Poot, and has undergone six selection cycles. The experimental design used was completely randomized, with seven response variables: stem diameter, plant height, number of lateral branches, number of fruits per plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, and fruit weight. The variables were measured in 10 plants for each genetic material, resulting in a total of 30 plants analyzed. Subsequently, the mean and the analysis of variance were obtained to determine the ecotype that showed the best performance. When evaluating the ecotype under open-field conditions, it was determined that material 1 (large fruit) was more productive than material 2 (homogeneous fruit), since it still presents a mixture of ecotypes and requires further selection. For this reason, it does not fully meet the characteristics required for commercialization; however, as a green fruit it is well accepted due to its good flavor and aroma. Nevertheless, the overall analysis indicated that the best genetic material corresponded to material 2, as it showed homogeneous fruits, greater uniformity in production, and characteristics consistent with vi the original ecotype of the Yaax’ ic chili, as well as more uniform plant growth. Therefore, it is suggested that this material be considered for future genetic improvement studies. Material 3 showed very low productivity, as it had not undergone previous selection and exhibited scarce fruit production, limited branching, and high variability in fruit size. However, it did not present virosis problems, and flooding did not affect it. Finally, the Yaax’ ic chili plants demonstrated tolerance to drought and flooding, as well as resistance to virosis problems caused by the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Genn.). However, they were less tolerant to leaf miner damage (Liriomyza trifolii Burgess). In conclusion, these plants were found to be well adapted to shallow soils.es_MX
