Description: The Tren Maya is a rail infrastructure project in Mexico that seeks to improve connectivity and economic development in the southeast of the country, covering the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. With an extension of approximately 1,500 kilometers, the project poses significant challenges in civil engineering, due to the diversity of terrain and environmental sensitivity of the region, especially in the Yucatan Peninsula, which has karst soils and ecosystems of high biodiversity. To address these challenges, innovative solutions have been implemented such as advanced geotechnical studies, studies of various banks of stone materials to meet the requirements of the project, construction of wildlife crossings, and hybrid and potentially electric train options to reduce environmental impact. In addition to the connectivity and transportation benefits, the Tren Maya aims to boost tourism, promote local employment, and generate balanced and sustainable development in nearby communities.
